CC to HP Calculator

Estimate a realistic horsepower range from engine displacement using adjustable engine-type specific-output assumptions.

CC to HP Calculator visual guide

Worked example

A 1,998 cc naturally aspirated petrol engine is 1.998 litres. At 60–100 hp/L, the estimate is about 120–200 hp. A modern turbocharged version of the same displacement could sit well outside that range.

Why CC does not convert directly to horsepower

CC measures swept volume. Horsepower measures the rate of doing work. Displacement can be a useful clue when comparing broadly similar engines, but it is not a power measurement. Small highly boosted engines can out-power much larger low-stress engines.

When this calculator is useful

Use it when you only know displacement and want a rough sanity-check range, particularly for older specifications, small engines or unfamiliar machinery. If a manufacturer, dyno sheet or reliable technical source gives an actual power figure, use that instead.
